Air Fryer Whole Chicken 🙌🏾

The air fryer is one of my favorite appliances, ever. I could sing fiftyleven praises about that damn machine because it’s that good. Sure, I’ve cooked chicken in it before, but it’s always been chicken parts. I was curious if it could not only handle a whole bird but also yield great texture-specific results. Needless to say, here we are. When I tell you that it is a weekly staple over this way!

This air fryer chicken is deeply flavorful since it’s perfectly seasoned with a variety of spices. Ain’t no sad, dry chicken going on…the chicken meat is extra tender and juicy on the inside + crispyyy on the outside, whew!

Why This Air Fryer Chicken Recipe Works

Here are the main highlights you’ll appreciate about this one:

  1. Chicken dinner winner…Me 🤝🏾 this whole chicken. I know many folks love a good chicken for any occasion, but especially for a dinner the whole family will enjoy. Just like my creamy garlic herb chicken, this swoon-worthy chicken in white wine, and BBR community favorite brown stew chicken…this one is a reliable chicken winner, too! I’m talking weeknight suppers, cozy Sunday meals, holiday mains, and everything in between ♡.
  2. The flavors are flavoring…With just a few spices that each pack a nice punch, they elevate and deliver so much flavor-filled goodness to this air fryer whole chicken. I’ve always believed that chicken doesn’t need too much fuss, just a variety of simple spices that complement each other.
  3. Foolproof & easy like 123…This air fryer chicken is nearly impossible to mess up. It’s wildly straightforward and comes together so quickly. I’ve also got you covered with step-by-step images for recipe success!

Ingredients Needed For This Recipe:

(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card directly below.)

  • Whole chicken: We’re making an “air fryer whole chicken” so yeah, ha. In all seriousness, a whole chicken that’s around 4-5 pounds is what you’ll need. A chicken that’s any larger than that range may not fit inside of the air fryer.
  • Garlic powder: I use a good amount for tonssss of garlicky flavor, mmm.
  • Cajun seasoning: This type of seasoning is a blend that contains salt, red pepper, black pepper, garlic, and more. Brands like Slap Ya Mama or Tony Chachere’s stay in my kitchen pantry for all that Cajun-forward flava!
  • Old Bay seasoning: This seasoning blend contains celery salt, pepper, and paprika to name a few. A lot of people think that this seasoning is only for seafood, but nah it’s sooo good on chicken as well!
  • Herbs de Provence: Truly one of my holy grail spices. Herbs de Provence or Herbs of Provence is a blend of dried herbs like basil, oregano, parsley, fennel seed, lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme, and marjoram. This classic blend of herbs is considered a staple in French cooking hence its name from the Provence region. Heaps of herby notes in this one!
  • Smoked paprika: Love the smoky, peppery, and distinctive flavor of this one.
  • Olive oil: To make a marinade, we’ll combine oil with the dry spices.

How To Make This Air Fryer Whole Chicken:

(Note: please see the recipe card directly below for the complete written instructions.)

  1. Prep chicken & assemble the marinade. Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel- this is extra important because moisture is the enemy of crispy chicken skin! In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, Old Bay seasoning, Herbs de Provence, and smoked paprika. Whisk the seasonings to combine, and then add the oil and whisk until well combined.
  2. Season & lather it up! Place the chicken onto a cutting board and pour the seasoning marinade over the chicken. Use your hands to massage the marinade all over the chicken, get inside the cavity and under the skin as well. Don’t be shy, get all up in every nook and cranny with the marinade.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F. Place the chicken into the air fryer basket breast-side down. Air fry the chicken for 30 minutes. After that first cook, flip the chicken to the breast-side up and continue cooking for another 20-25 minutes; or until the chicken registers at least 165°F when checked with an internal thermometer for doneness.
  4. Rest & serve. After air frying, place the chicken onto a clean cutting board and let it rest for at least 15 minutes before cutting into it. Then cut the chicken as desired and serve immediately alongside lemon wedges for squeezing, if desired. Ayyyeeee! This chicken though, chef’s kiss 👅.

Tips + Tricks & Extra Notes:

  • Air fryer notes: I have a 6 quart air fryer and a 4-5 pound whole chicken fits perfectly. If you have a smaller air fryer it’s possible to cook a whole chicken of this size if your appliance has a removable grate (the basket itself) to give it more room. The chicken should fit comfortably with enough space.
  • What to serve with my air fryer whole chicken? This juicy, crispy chicken will be amazing paired alongside collard greens, fried sweet plantains, cornbread, or a good ole wedge salad…yes! Or any other side your heart desires!
  • Save the carcass! Yup, save the chicken carcass to make homemade stock if you’d like. Whenever I have any leftover cooked chicken bones, I always save them for this purpose. Gather the leftover chicken bones and skin/bits, simply combine them with aromatic scraps like onion, celery, and carrot + herbs/spices. Add everything into a large stock pot, cover with water, and simmer for at least 4 hours. Strain the stock and store your liquid gold! 😮‍💨

Description

This Air Fryer Whole Chicken recipe contains only seven ingredients and yields the most flavorful chicken with juicy meat and crispy skin! Cooking a whole chicken in the air fryer is a sure way to prevent dryness and yield a super tender chicken. It’s an unbelievably easy recipe and perfect for lunch, weeknight dinners, and beyond!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (4-5 lb) whole chicken, giblets removed
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons Herbs de Provence
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • Lemon wedges, for squeezing- optional

Instructions

  1. Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel- do this very well to ensure crispy chicken skin! In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, Old Bay seasoning, Herbs de Provence, and smoked paprika. Whisk the seasonings to combine, and then add the oil and whisk until well combined.
  2. Place the chicken onto a cutting board and pour the seasoning marinade over the chicken. Use your hands (fitted with disposable gloves if desired) to massage the marinade all over the chicken, be sure to get inside the cavity and under the skin as well, ensuring every inch of the chicken is lathered nicely.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F. Place the chicken into the air fryer basket breast-side down. Air fry the chicken for 30 minutes. Then flip the chicken to the breast-side up and continue cooking for another 20-25 minutes; or until the chicken registers at least 165°F when checked with an internal thermometer.
  4. After air frying, place the chicken onto a clean cutting board and let it rest for at least 15 minutes before cutting into it. Then cut the chicken as desired and place it on a serving platter- feel free to spoon some of the drippings in the air fryer basket over the chicken. Serve immediately alongside lemon wedges for squeezing, if desired. Enjoy!
