A loaf baking in the oven is one of my favorite scents to fill the house, truly so damn cozy.

Ingredients For This Banana Bread Recipe
(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card directly below.)
- Extra ripe bananas: The very best bananas used for making banana bread are super ripe, spotty af, blackity black lookin’ bananas, ok. These extra old and ultra ripe ones produce the most flavorful kinds of banana bread- trust me on this and put those solid yellow bananas somewhere else plz.
- Brown sugar: There is nothing like brown sugar in baked goods. This kind of sugar is infused with molasses and gives this chocolate banana bread even more depth as opposed to using regular white granulated sugar (and of course you could use as a sub, if needed). Although, please use brown sugar.
- Vegetable oil: Contributes to the moistness in this bread, sub for canola oil.
- Eggs: Two large eggs, simple + easy!
- Vanilla/Almond extract: Use ’em both, these flavorings are so nice and lovely.
- Sour cream: Another ingredient to keep things ultra moist, sub for greek yogurt.
- Salt: Helps to balance out all of the other flavors.
- All purpose flour: Traditional and #1 type of flour- I have not tested this recipe using other flours.
- Baking soda: The leavening agent, check that expiration date and make sure it’s fresh!
- Dutch-process cocoa powder: This type of cocoa powder is washed with an alkalizing agent that lessens the acidity of natural cocoa powder. Dutch process cocoa powder creates an even tastier chocolate product because it is more pure and allows the chocolate flavor to truly shine through.
- Espresso powder: This product always enhances anything with chocolate in it, so incredible!
- Mini chocolate chips: These are perfect- not too big and incorporates into the batter seamlessly.

How To Ripen Bananas Quickly
>> Have some bananas on the counter but they’re not quite ready for banana bread? Listen up…
The oven method is the most effective for getting those bananas nice and ripe! First, preheat the oven to 300°F and line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Lay the bananas onto the baking sheet and bake them until they’re black and feel soft, about 25-30 minutes. This could take a little longer depending on the temperature of your oven. However, after baking them you’re ready to make this chocolate banana bread!
What Makes This Banana Bread So Good?
This bread recipe is the best of both worlds. It’s banana bread that meets a deep chocolate cake-like moment. Cocoa powder and chocolate chips create a luxurious chocolatey dream team. Additionally, it’s a super flavorful beauty with depth from both vanilla and almond extract as well as espresso powder. I like how it’s also so incredibly moist and tender from the oil and sour cream. Ugh, just so rich + dreamy.
Wanna Make Chocolate Banana Bread Muffins?
This recipe will make around 10-12 muffins. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Fill your cupcake liners 2/3 of the way full, sprinkle the chocolate chips on top, and bake. The baking time on muffins should be around 25-30 minutes: or until a toothpick inserted into the center of your muffin comes out clean. Love muffins, too!
Let’s Talk Chocolate Chips
I love the use of mini semi-sweet chocolate chips within this banana bread recipe. They’re smaller in size and for the portion that goes into the batter, it blends in better. I find that it creates smaller pockets of chocolate. However, *you can surely use regular sized chocolate chips* within this recipe as well. Also, switch it up if you’d like and use your favorite baking chips like peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, etc.
Tips + Tricks For Storing
Once the loaf cools down completely, wrap it up using plastic wrap. You can keep it out on the counter or transfer it into the refrigerator. The chocolate banana bread will keep for about 3-4 days. You can also freeze the loaf and it will keep for a longer timeframe (up to one month)- be sure to defrost the bread and let it come back up to room temperature prior to serving.

Description
Say hello to this deliciously moist and flavorful double chocolate banana bread, y’all. Loaded with signature banana bread flavor mixed with chocolate cake-like vibes, this loaf is absolutely incredible. Cocoa powder and chocolate chips gives this beauty extra chocolatey goodness- perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack!
Ingredients
- 4 extra ripe bananas
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil, or canola oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream, or plain/vanilla greek yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 2/3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder, sub for any unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon espresso powder
- 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
Instructions
- Before you begin: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Generously spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan on all sides with baking spray. I also like to line my loaf pan with a piece of parchment paper with some overhang on the sides to make taking the loaf out all the easier. Then set it aside.
- Combining the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, add in the ripe bananas use a fork to mash them up until they’re all mashed together with no huge chunks. Add in the sugar, oil, eggs, vanilla/almond extract, and sour cream. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Dry ingredients: Add the salt, flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, and espresso powder. Use a rubber spatula to fold the dry ingredients into the wet until everything is fully combined. Then fold in 1/2 cup of the mini chocolate chips into the batter and stir together to combine.
- Empty the batter into the prepared loaf pan and use an offset spatula to smooth the top, if needed. I also like to gently tap the loaf pan on the counter to bring any air pockets to the surface. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of mini chocolate cups all over the top of the loaf.
- Baking the loaf: Bake the loaf for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean- *Note: depending on the temperature of your oven, I recommend checking in on the loaf starting at the 1 hour mark.
- Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes and then transfer the loaf to a wire rack to continue cooling down. Then slice the chocolate banana bread into servings and enjoy!
