Homemade Smash Burgers! 🍔
Listen, I’m not of the camp that believes that “burger meat doesn’t need much.” Nah, I want my burger meat to have flavor…idc idc. Whew, the burger meat is perfectly seasoned, peeps. There’s not too much going on and not too little. Every element adds a ton of depth that hits.
Walk with me; double patty burgers that are packed with flavor, seared until crisp yet juicy, melty cheese, and an epic burger sauce. It’s wildly delicious, a classic American treat, and such a crowd pleaser!

Smash Burger Ingredients:
(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card directly below.)
- For the burgers: Ground beef, dried onion, diced jalapeños, Cajun seasoning, salt/pepper, burger buns, butter, sliced cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles.

How To Make Homemade Smash Burgers:
(Note: please see the recipe card directly below for the complete written instructions.)
- Prep the burger meat. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef along with the remaining burger ingredients. Then divide the beef into 8 equal portions and roll them into balls, and set aside.
- Cook burgers: Heat the grill over medium-high heat (400-450°F) with a griddle in place. Place the burger balls onto the hot griddle and use a burger/grill press to firmly press straight down onto the patty, forming a thin patty. Cook the patty for 2 minutes on the first side until nicely seared and juices begin to form on the surface. Then use a spatula to scrape under the patty and flip the patty to continue cooking for 1 minute on the other side. Top each burger with a slice of cheese. Transfer the cooked smash burgers to a clean plate and repeat the process until all patties are cooked.

Can I Make These Burgers On The Stovetop?
Yes! These smash burgers can easily be made right on the stovetop in a skillet. Full stovetop notes are in the recipe card below, but here’s the gist…→ Heat a large cast-iron skillet until it’s nice and hot. Then coat the pan with oil. Working in batches, add a burger ball to the hot pan and use a burger/grill press to firmly press straight down onto the patty, forming a thin patty. Continue cooking, flip, and then top with cheese.

Burger Sauce From Scratch:
This burger sauce is flavor-loaded and adds the perfect, creamy touch to top off these smash burgers, y’all 😛. It comes together in a pinch, too! Just combine all of the burger sauce ingredients and stir the sauce until well combined and fully incorporated. Use as much of it as you’d like on your burgers and enjoy ya life, gahhhh!

Toppings or Nah?:
Some folks are all about no toppings and some are give me all of the toppings. Which one are you? Now, I do like some toppings on my burgers to add some texture and contrast. Toppings that I typically serve with these smash burgers include lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced red onion, and pickles. These are all optional and suited to your personal preference mmmkay.
Serving & Pairings:
My baked potato wedges would be insane with these smash burgers, or check out my milk boiled corn on the cob– yummo!

These flavor-loaded burgers can be cooked up in a skillet on the stovetop or on a griddle outdoors!
Ingredients
For the burger sauce:
- ¾ cup full-fat mayonnaise (I use Dukes)
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup sweet relish
- 1 tablespoon Creole Cajun Seasoning– homemade or store-bought
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
- Kosher salt & fresh ground black pepper- to taste
For the burgers & assembly:
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (I use 93/7)
- 2 tablespoons dried chopped/minced onion
- 1 ½ tablespoons diced jalapenos (from jarred sliced jalapenos)
- 2 teaspoons Creole Cajun Seasoning– homemade or store-bought
- Kosher salt & fresh ground black pepper- to taste
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil, plus more for stovetop cooking
- 4 burger buns (soft white, brioche, etc)
- Softened butter, for burger buns
- 8 slices American cheese (or cheese of choice)
- Lettuce & sliced tomato, sliced onion, pickles- optional
Instructions
- Prep the burger sauce. In a bowl, mason jar, or deli container, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, Cajun seasoning, worcestershire sauce, garlic paste, dijon mustard, and salt/pepper to taste. Stir the sauce until well combined and fully incorporated. Cover the vessel and transfer to the fridge for the flavors to meld until the burgers are ready.
- Prep the burger meat. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, dried onion, diced jalapenos, Cajun seasoning, salt/pepper to taste, and 1 tablespoon avocado oil. Use your hands (fitted with disposable gloves if desired) to work the mixture until just combined- careful not to overwork. Then divide the beef into 8 equal portions and roll them into balls, and set aside.
- To cook burgers via grill: Heat the grill over medium-high heat (400-450°F) with a griddle in place. Butter and toast the buns by placing them onto the griddle on the buttered side, let toast for 1 minute until golden, and then set the buns aside.
- Place 4 burger balls onto the hot griddle and use a burger/grill press to firmly press straight down onto the patty, forming a thin patty.
- To cook burgers via stovetop: Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium to medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes until it’s nice and hot. Then coat the pan with 1 tablespoon of oil. Working in batches, add a burger ball to the hot pan and use a burger/grill press to firmly press straight down onto the patty, forming a thin patty. Cook the patty for 2 minutes on the first side until nicely seared and juices begin to form on the surface. Then use a spatula to scrape under the patty and flip the patty to continue cooking for 1 minute on the other side. Top the burger with a slice of cheese. Transfer the cooked smash burger to a clean plate and repeat the process until all patties are cooked.
- Serve. Place lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles (if using toppings) on the bottom of the bun as desired. Then place one smash burger on the bottom of the bun, and then top with another to make a double patty burger. Spread a generous amount of burger sauce onto the top of the bun and then top the double patty smash burger(s). Enjoy!
